Solar Panel Cleaning on the North Shore

Salt off the Hauraki Gulf, pōhutukawa pollen and gull droppings build up fast on North Shore roofs, and mature tree cover keeps the shaded side damp enough for lichen to take hold. We clean with pure water, check the whole system while we’re up there, and send you a report with before and after photos.

Real jobs around North Shore

Before and after, on real North Shore roofs

Every one of these is a real North Shore job, photographed by our techs on the day. Salt film, pōhutukawa pollen and bird mess don’t rinse off. They come off with pure water, soft brushes and a bit of patience.

Why North Shore Panels Need Regular Attention

North Shore conditions accelerate the build-up that quietly reduces your solar output. Here's what our team regularly deals with on the North Shore, and why regular cleaning pays off.

Hauraki Gulf Salt Spray

The east-coast bays catch salt off the gulf year-round. On a sheltered roof it builds steadily because rain never fully rinses it.

Pōhutukawa Pollen & Leaf Litter

Coastal pōhutukawa drop pollen and fine leaf litter straight onto panels through summer, and it traps moisture against the glass.

Gulls On The Coast, Mynas Inland

Gulls nest along the bays and mynas dominate further inland. Both get under panels, and nesting material blocks the airflow the array needs.

Mature Tree Cover & Lichen

Older Shore sections have established trees that keep arrays shaded and damp, which is exactly the condition lichen needs to take hold.

What we find on North Shore roofs

Taken from our job records for the North Shore, Hibiscus Coast and Rodney, January 2023 to now.

1 in 4cleans also needed lichen treated

45 of the 172 cleans in our records north of the bridge needed lichen treated on top of the clean.

Nestsunder newer systems too

Customers in Browns Bay, Dairy Flat, Redvale, Stillwater and Matakana have called about birds nesting under their panels, some on systems only a year or two old. Mynas are the ones they name.

Pine pollenevery spring

From Greenhithe to Silverdale, yellow pine pollen sticks to panels through spring. Some customers ask us to book after the pollen drop, others want it off straight away.

Greenhithe (0632), Stanmore Bay (0932) and Riverhead (0793) lead, with Bayview, Beach Haven and Dairy Flat close behind and Warkworth (0910) up north.

What you get

Every clean, every time

The same three steps on every North Shore job, from a small array on a family home to a full commercial roof.

01

Safety and system check

Before anything gets wet we look over the panels, wiring, mounts and inverter, and flag anything that’s going to cost you later.

02

Pure-water clean

Deionised water through soft brushes on water-fed poles. No chemicals and no water-blasting, so nothing that could harm the glass or the seals.

03

Report and photos

A written report on how your system is doing, with before and after photos so you can see exactly what came off.

Most homes take about an hour. Lichen treatment or bird proofing can be done on the same visit.

How we clean residential solar systems

Ben shows how we clean a residential solar system, from setting up our pure water system to going through our maintenance check and outlining a couple of common issues we see impacting your solar system’s output. After this clean, we saw a 21% increase in system output.

Who turns up

About Eco Shine Solar

Eco Shine Solar is owned and run by three brothers, Edwin, Sam and Ben, born and raised in the Bay of Plenty.

Before solar we represented New Zealand in beach volleyball, picking up a bronze at the Commonwealth Games. We’ve brought the same work ethic from the sand to the roofs, cleaning solar since 2017.

Every job is done by our own team, with pure-water gear and a written report at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most homes take about an hour. Two-storey roofs, salt build-up and lichen treatment take longer, and we’ll tell you roughly how long when we quote.

Yes. We work the North Shore and the wider area on the same runs, including Warkworth, Riverhead, Helensville, Dairy Flat and Stanmore Bay. Ask for a quote and we’ll fit you into the next run through your area.

Yes. Coastal pōhutukawa drop pollen and fine leaf litter straight onto panels through summer, and it traps moisture against the glass rather than washing off. Combined with salt carried off the Hauraki Gulf, it builds into a film that a rinse won’t properly shift. A pure-water clean lifts both without scratching the panels.

Yes. Gulls nest along the bays and mynas dominate further inland, and both get up under the array for shelter. Droppings create hot spots on the cells, and nesting material blocks the airflow the panels need to run efficiently. We check for this on every clean and can mesh the gaps as a bird proofing add-on if birds have already moved in.

Solar Panel Services in North Shore

Every job on the North Shore is done by our own team with pure-water equipment, a written report, and before-and-after photos. Get a free quote or explore our services below.

We cover the North Shore and the wider area on the same run, including Takapuna, Devonport, Albany, Browns Bay, Milford and Silverdale, plus out to Warkworth, Riverhead, Helensville, Dairy Flat and Stanmore Bay. North Shore roofs deal with two recurring problems: salt carried off the Hauraki Gulf that builds up on sheltered roofs rain never fully rinses, and lichen under the mature tree cover common on older Shore sections. Both need a pure-water clean rather than a rinse, and the lichen usually needs a dedicated treatment on the first visit.
